Grosse Pointe's premiere dance and performing arts school!

Grosse Pointe's Premiere Dance and Performing Arts School We believe dance education is valuable. Research has shown the physical, social, emotional and cognitive benefits of dance education in young children. In addition, our students learn that dance brings rewards far beyond a trophy—we have seen our dancers develop a passion for and commitment to the arts throughout their higher education and beyond.

Many of our dancers have gone on to schools such as Julliard, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University. They have been accepted at prestigious summer programs from American Ballet Theater, Juilliard, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Met, Alvin Ailey, Kirov Academy of Ballet, Chicago Ballet, and Sarasota Ballet. And many have remained dedicated to dance, whether through dancing for professional companies, teaching, or dance journalism.

CHILD & YOUTH DANCE DIVISION – ages 6-12

The discipline and vocabulary of traditional ballet, tap, hip hop, modern and jazz is taught to children ages 6-12, in Levels 1-3.  We strongly urge younger students who have an interest in moving into our Elite Dance Program to take multiple ballet classes a week.  In addition to ballet classes we also encourage adding jazz, modern, tap or hip-hop for dancers who desire versatility in movements and style.

Changes and advancements for children to their next level of study in dance are made only upon the recommendations of the faculty and/or Director. The MADC class syllabus has been designed as a two-year program of study. Students are evaluated constantly and will be advanced to the next level depending upon his/her progress. Ability is the only criteria for advancement, not age.

TEEN & ADULT DANCE PROGRAMS – ages 13 & UP

The Teen, Adult dance program at Mack Avenue Dance Center is without a doubt one of the leading dance training programs for young adults available in Michigan.

Classes and methodology are designed specifically to impact and garner swift progression in teenage dancers, guaranteeing unsurpassed instruction in both the recreational, and competitive programs. We provide a fun, high energy, and positive environment for all of our dancers.

No distinction is made between student types, as “recreational” students, who choose to dance for pure enjoyment or physical activity, are given no less consideration then their competitive counterparts who have chosen to make dance their primary extracurricular pursuit. Regardless of program concentration, all students are given the tools needed to exceed expectations and excel to their individual fullest potential.
These hallmarks are made possible only by hosting one of the greatest faculty teams in the region. Students are afforded the distinct privilege of training with only the most skilled and experienced dance educators in the area.

What is the Cecchetti Ballet Program?

The Cecchetti Council of America is an organization dedicated to maintaining the standards and method of ballet training established by Cav. Enrico Cecchetti.  The organization uses his teaching and writings in a sequence of grades, carefully measured as to degree of difficulty and physical development, and provides a system of accredited examinations to test the student’s proficiency within those grades.  The Cecchetti method offers many rewards to the individual as each grade is successfully completed.

Students should realize that there is a specific goal to their Cecchetti class. Our goal is to take pride in the accomplishment of receiving a Cecchetti Certificate that was earned with hard work through self-discipline, commitment and dedication.

Parents, students and instructors should realize that working toward the Cecchetti examinations will require determination and tenacity for all involved. Students will feel their bodies strengthen as well as their minds and have a great time doing so. Students are NOT required, nor are we obligated in any way to send all students in for their Cecchetti exams.  Students will take their exams when we feel they are best prepared and ready to be tested.

Mack Avenue Dance center Policies

Withdrawal

There is a two-month minimum registration requirement for all classes. If a student wishes to discontinue classes before these two initial months are up, a WITHDRAWAL FORM (available at the front desk) must be given to the studio office by the 15th of the second month in advance to avoid further billing.  Payment drafts will continue until the studio is notified that a student is discontinuing. There are NO refunds given for discontinued classes or missed classes.

A WITHDRAWAL FORM must be submitted to the office by the 15th of any month to stop the NEXT month’s charges to your account. Any withdrawal forms completed after the 15th will be considered dated as the 15th of the next month.  For example, if your dancer decides to drop in October, you must submit the form by October 15th in order to avoid being charged for November.

Monthly tuition is computed on the entire school year and divided into equal monthly payments and is the same each month.  Phone calls, phone messages, or verbal notice are not accepted as a form of withdrawal.  Payments will continue until you notify GPDC to discontinue them. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend every class and to arrive on time. Progress in class depends upon the student’s regular attendance and consistent class participation. Important warm-up exercises are conducted at the beginning of class and arriving late to class causes disruption. At the teacher’s discretion, students who enter the class late for any reason may be asked to sit on the sidelines and observe. Students are allowed to make-up classes anytime during the term. Make-up classes must be of the same level and type. Any classes not made up during the term are forfeited.

  • Dancers at the intermediate level or above are only allowed three unexcused absences.

  • If you are sick and/or contagious, please stay home! Students are requested to call the studio and report their absence, leaving a message on the answering machine if necessary. Students should speak to their instructor later to determine a make-up class that they can attend.

  • Injured students are required to watch class and take notes.

  • Cell phones are permitted in the waiting area only. They are to be turned off or put on silent mode before entering the dance studio.

  • Teachers have the responsibility to keep their class under control and the authority to dismiss any student who is uncooperative and/or a disruption to the class.

Class Cancellation Policy

Due to low attendance (less than 6 students) class may be cancelled. If appropriate, the class might be combined with another class at that same time or the student might transfer to another class on a different day. If an appropriate substitution cannot be made, the student is entitled to a refund.

Make-up Classes

Make-up classes are offered if classes are missed due to illness and if a 24-hour notice has been given to the office.  Make-up lessons will be limited to 3 per teaching year.  No refunds will be given for missed classes.  (School activities such as field trips, Spring Breaks, sports games, etc do not qualify for make-up classes).  No make-up classes will be permitted after April 1.

Class Observation

Observers are not allowed in class.  This is disrupting to the students and the class.  At the teachers discretion, there may be a “Parents observation” week during October and December for parents to watch their dancer in class.  Siblings are allowed during the observation class provided they do not cause a disturbance.  Flash photography is not permitted during observation.

Teacher/ Studio Director Consultations

Please contact the front desk during our business hours (Mon-Fri 4:00-7:00pm), first if you have a question or a need.  Usually, the front desk personnel are able to address your concerns in a brief conversation.  If you need to discuss anything further regarding your child, please arrange a meeting or request a phone call with the teacher or Studio Director through the Administrative Assistants at the front desk.  Sorry, but teachers do not have time to talk between classes.

Inclement Weather Policies

MADC follows the Grosse Pointe School District Calendar for most holidays and snowdays.   If school has not been canceled and weather conditions have worsened throughout the school day, please call the studio for updated cancellations.

Care of Students / Waiting Area

MADC is not responsible for providing before or after class care for students.  Out of concern for our students and their families, the following rules apply to the waiting area:

  • Students are not to be left at the school for excessive periods before or after their classes.

  • Children under eight years of age are not to be left in the waiting area/lobby without parental supervision. Parents are required to supervise their child(ren) and limit their child(ren)’s noise level and behavior to prevent disruptions, reduce confusion, and make everyone’s wait quiet.

  • Students are to take all belongings home with them after each class. MADC is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. Personal items that are left behind are placed in the lost-and-found box.

  • Food, gum, and beverages (other than water) are NOT permitted in the waiting area or dance studios. A student may bring a water bottle to class. If water bottles are brought, PLEASE remind your child to bring them home with them. If they are left in the studio, they will be thrown out. There are breaks for water during shoe and class changes. Spills and garbage ruin the floor, attract bugs, and wreck the studio for the students and parents. Be considerate of others!

Dance is about fun and discipline.  Part of the discipline of dance is to be properly attired.  When a teacher cannot see a person’s body working they cannot make corrections that will ultimately help the student.

Class Age & Level Assignments

Our professional staff will determine which classes are best suited for your dancer to ensure proper training.  Students should expect to stay in each level a minimum of 2 years.  Careful consideration is given to potential, ability to comprehend quickly, natural body-lines, maturity in applying corrections, and work ethic.  We try to place students in the most appropriate and challenging class for them.  Sometimes the teacher will determine that a student needs placed in a different class than what was originally assigned.  Should your child come home disappointed with their placement, it is your responsibility as a parent to remind them that hard work yields improvement.  They should work harder than ever and prove to their teacher that they deserve to be moved.

Please do not emphasize class levels with your dancer or with other parents and dancers.  That is ultimately detrimental to the student’s performance.  Your child’s progress is what is important.  Focus on the work-not the level.  Each child is unique and will progress according to their ability.

Beginning Pointe work:  Pointe is the most demanding genre of dance.  A student will be invited to take pointe when the teacher has determined, by careful observation, that the student is ready.  Beginning pointe before a student is ready increases the potential for injury.

Early Dance Divisionl (Ages 3-5):

  1. Beginner (Level 1): Designed for children who are new to dance or have minimal prior experience. Focuses on basic coordination, rhythm, and introductory movements.

Children (Ages 6-9) & Youth (Ages 9-12)

  1. Beginner (Level 1): Geared towards children or youth with little to no dance experience. Emphasizes fundamental techniques, coordination, musicality, and basic dance vocabulary.

  2. Intermediate (Level 2): For students who have a solid foundation in dance and are ready for more challenging exercises and combinations. Builds upon the basics and introduces more complex movements, sequences, and terminology.

  3. Advanced (Level 3): Designed for experienced dancers with a strong technical background. Focuses on refining technique, increasing flexibility, strength, and introducing more intricate choreography and artistic expression.

Teens (Ages 13-18):

  1. Beginner/Intermediate (Level 1-2): Suitable for teenagers who are new to dance or have some basic dance knowledge. Provides a comprehensive introduction to dance technique, alignment, musicality, and choreography.

  2. Intermediate (Level 3): Geared towards dancers with a solid foundation and intermediate skills. Emphasizes technical refinement, artistic interpretation, and the ability to execute more complex movement combinations.

  3. Advanced (Level 4-5): Designed for experienced teen dancers with a strong technical background. Focuses on advanced technique, intricate choreography, performance skills, and artistic development.

Adults (18+):

  1. Beginner (Level 1): Tailored for adults with little to no dance experience. Focuses on basic technique, flexibility, coordination, and introducing various dance styles.

  2. Intermediate (Level 2-3): Designed for adults who have some dance background and are looking to further develop their skills. Emphasizes technique refinement, musicality, and more challenging choreography.

  3. Advanced (Level 4-5): Geared towards experienced adult dancers with a high level of technical proficiency. Focuses on advanced technique, artistic expression, performance quality, and the exploration of different dance styles.

It's important to note that these levels are general classifications, and individual progress and abilities can vary. Dance instructors should assess students' skills and make adjustments to their placement as necessary to ensure appropriate challenge and growth.

Class Advancement

Changes and advancements for children to their next level of study in dance are made only upon the recommendations of the Faculty and/or Director. The GPDC class syllabus has been designed as a two-year program of study. Students are evaluated constantly and will be advanced to the next level depending upon his/her progress. Ability is the only criteria for advancement, not age.

Children progress at different rates due to physical and emotional differences. A student who is not promoted with others may well progress more rapidly than others as the body assimilates the dance techniques.

Class Etiquette

We want all of our students to have an enjoyable and educational experience.  Your child(ren) will be treated with courtesy and respect and we expect the same from them.  Please ensure that your dancer(s) observe the following rules:

  • Pay attention to your teacher. Listen closely to your teacher to make sure that you are understanding directions and corrections. Don’t talk with your friends during class. Talking with your friends disrupts the class and makes it difficult for the teacher to communicate with the students. Meet your friends before or after class for social fun.

  • Do not pull up or hang from the Ballet barres. The barres are for balance and support only. They can be pulled from the walls or you can get stuck in them if they are not used properly.

  • Come prepared to dance. Proper attire and grooming with positive attitude, ambition, and energy are essential for success.

  • Show respect to your teacher and to the dancers in your class by being on time for the start of class. Students who arrive late or leave early are disruptive to the class. Avoid this by arriving early to allow yourself time to change into dance shoes, stretch, and to be ready to begin class on time. Students who arrive 10 minutes after the scheduled class time are welcome to observe class; however, they will not be permitted to participate. If a student needs to leave class early, they should notify the teacher before class begins. Students may not leave class without first receiving permission from the teacher.
